Is Social Media taking over Journalism?

Professional or traditional Journalism as we know it, is fading away in the mist of Social Media and Citizen Journalists. The increasing population of social media and the universal access to handheld devices, cellphones, and computers has made ordinary people use social media to access news everywhere they go. Do we still Journalist?

Social Media usage is increasing rapidly and one can only wonder if we still need traditional journalists to broadcast or present news to the citizens or the public, because now citizens themselves because of social media have become journalists in the comfort of their own homes, or private spaces. Social media has made it easy to get a hold of news updates without the hustle of buying newspapers and magazines, meaning that social media is helping individuals to cut costs.(goo.gl/tkLzCB). The debating group argue that “national printed newspapers have declined by 700 000, whilst newspapers are not needed anymore, people are now focusing more on the web 2.0 which is social media, because it is faster and easy to use and to access .  debatinggroup.org.uk

Social Media today.
These days people want to have conversations with other people about the issues they read about on social media platforms, like; twitter, Facebook, YouTube and other social media platforms. Individuals want to have two-way communication and not one-way communication where they cannot comment or share their views on the stories they read, see and hear about on television, newspapers and magazines. But now social media makes it easy to have conversations, comment on other people’s views and have others comment on your views as well. My point is that, Social Media is taking over traditional journalism because it is forever changing, and providing more ways in which individuals can get involved and get news that is raw, unedited and heart heating, because before news get to the newspapers and broadcast news, we find that people are already talking about it on various social media platforms.

I would really appreciate to hear your views on this topic, so let’s have a conversation with each other tell me what you think.

days people literally live in their phones because of social media.

    1. Thank you for that, it only proves that times are changing and it's time we move to new possibilities and that is social media.

  2. I agree that Social media is taking over because nowadays news seems to travel faster on Social media before they can even reach print or broadcast media. These is because a lot of people are interested and spend more times in their phones...

    1. Thank you Dazzling Dee. It is true news does travel faster on social media, not to mention that social media is cheaper and convenient so we do not have to buy newspapers and wait till we get home to watch the news to know what is happening around us during the day. And not forgetting that social media is interactive and conversational, which is what we want to do nowadays, have conversations with each other, comment on other people's views and vice versa. So journalists are not needed that much anymore.

    1. Wow! Pretty good points there, you know that these we go to our phones for everything, so I think that we no longer need journalists that much. This is because before you go home and watch the news, you already know what happened during the day, because social media was already buzzing with the news. I mean think back to the earthquake that happened on Tuesday, I did not feel as it but as soon as I checked twitter and Facebook there was already a buzz about it and the damage it had done and people saying it was hectic
. So this only proves my point which is journalists are a thing of the past.

  4. I feel that social media is taking over journalism because ordinary people are able to report events that take place in there where abouts. They are much faster at doing it than journalists because they use social media; twitter, Facebook, Instagram etc...

    1. Thank you Laura, and the thing is that we no longer see the need for newspapers or to wait for journalists to report the news to us, because there are so many social sites that can inform us of the news, latest trends and so much more and at a click of a button, so what more can we ask for if not convenience.

  5. Social media is rather becoming the next big platform. Journalistic skills need to switch to the digital age. Today's life is the on-the-go life, people don't rely much on print media.

    1. Well said Gordon, but i would like to correct you on one thing though, that Social Media is not the next big thing cause it is already big and getting even bigger as the years pass, meaning we might have more social sites next year than we do now. Why is this? because people are now more than ever hooked to their phones because of the buzz that social media has about almost everything you can think of. So all i can say is that watch out Journalism, Social Media has arrived.

    1. Thank you Pachida, i do not think we need journalists that much anymore, because you, yourself can became a citizen journalist using social media as a platform to voice out your opinions and getting feedback while you at it. So all am saying is that if Journalist do not step up and move with the new age which is Social Media, they will be left outside looking in.

  7. Even if the world is moving to digital media. I still believe that we need traditional media to help us make sense of the news!

    1. Thank you Nomfundo, I strongly disagree because the broadcast news and journalists themselves do not always give us the whole story just bits and pieces of what took place. But the thing about social media is that even if you get different views about what happened, you still get every detail of the story raw and unedited. So am still sticking to my story which is Social Media is taking over Journalism.

  8. well in essence times are changing and we are developing as we go, so i think that Journalists can work hand in hand with these now called 'citizen journalists because they are part of the public that experience these issues and are just more vocal about them, than the rest of the public at large.

  9. Thank you Lettie. And yes i agree with maybe if traditional journalists could work together with citizen journalists via social media then journalism might still have a future in the new age of which is social media. all am saying is that journalists should adapt or they will very soon perish.

  10. Social media is slowly but surely taking over journalist jobs, journalist should definitely establish a relationship with citizen journalism if they really don't want to perish.

  12. I think that as much as the Social media has grown. We still need journalist. As much as anyone can publish news on social media, Journalist are more credible than normal people who are on social media.

  13. Yes i agree with you but journalists can twist a story and make it more beneficial to them and their own credibility, so we can not really say journalists are more credible than social media
